Ductless Mini Splits
Zoned HVAC System
Ductless mini-split heat pump and air conditioning systems make excellent retrofit options to homes and businesses with “non-ducted” heating systems. Quality Heating offers ductless mini-splits as an alternative to traditional heating and cooling systems when home additions and remodeling projects make the extension or installation of traditional HVAC air ducts impossible or unduly costly.
The energy-efficient choice
Mini-splits systems have no ductwork, making them extremely energy-efficient. The beauty of ductless mini-splits lies in their ease of installation and cost efficiency. Duct losses can account for more than 30% of energy consumption, especially if the ducts run through unconditioned spaces, such as attics. Ductless mini-split systems completely eliminate the losses associated with the ductwork of central forced air systems, eliminating high maintenance costs.
How does a ductless mini-split system work?
Ductless mini-splits work by having an outdoor and indoor unit, much like traditional heating and cooling systems. Unlike the traditional systems, ductless splits require only a three-inch hole in the wall for installation and each room is separately controlled. This makes them a more cost-effective option than traditional heating and cooling systems, as rooms can be adjusted according to personal preference or how often they are used.

Quick tips for maintaining mini-splits
Just like with HVAC systems, regular maintenance and upkeep is required for your mini-split system to function at its best. Below are some tips which can help to ensure a long and productive life for your mini-split heating and cooling system:
- Clear debris. The outdoor components of your mini-split condenser should be clear of sticks, leaves, garbage or other debris capable of fitting through the protective grille. Most mini-split condenser fan blades are made of plastic and can easily be broken by items capable of fitting through the grille. Owners should also make an effort to keep grass clippings from blowing towards the vents while mowing the lawn. Make sure no plants or weeds can grow up around or into the mini-split condenser as well.
- Clean inside the condenser. Another important measure is spraying out the inside of your mini-split condenser at least once a year. This washes away any buildup of dirt or grime, removing any debris which moved into the mini-split condenser housing. Many mini-split owners remove the top cover when spraying to ensure the housing is cleaned out. Let the condenser unit dry out for around 24 hours.
- Check the lines and piping. Remember to check the lines and copper piping inside and outside your mini-split condenser housing for any oily residues or rust. Refrigerant leaks leave an oily residue and giving your unit a quick once-over saves you hundreds in potential mini-split repairs. Also make sure the unit is level, as an uneven condenser can cause many operating issues.
- Contact Quality Heating for professional help. While the maintenance tips listed above improve the operational lifespan and durability of mini split systems, you may encounter issues requiring professional maintenance or repair. If your ductless mini-split system isn’t operating correctly or if you have refrigerant leaking from the piping, call the heating and cooling experts at Quality Heating.
